Absolute encoders are used in a wide range of equipment and products wherein there exists a need for accurate rotary position feedback at the instant the machine is powered on.

The advantage of an absolute rotary encoder over an incremental rotary encoder is that the absolute encoder can give the true position of the shaft at startup without requiring the system to home (mechanical movement to locate the once-per-revolution index pulse and subsequent zero of the counter).
Absolute rotary encoders are typically single-turn or multi-turn. Single-turn encoders ouput serially the full range of absolute rotary positions of the shaft within one turn. Multi-turn encoders operate similarly to single-turn encoders but have the capability of storing the count at each revolution to provide feedback for multiple revolution positioning.
